There's a nice view as with almost any place in NZ near a lighthouse. I would say this is not worth the trek though. You must drive on a dusty road out to the lighthouse - leave your car and walk up … Full review by qlash

A bit of a hike down to where the seals hang out. They will be close and there will be a lot more down on the shore. Mid day there were no penguins. Full review by JohnTSanAntone

Hello! Can i know roughly what is the best time can we see the seals and yellow eyed penguins at Katiki Point Lighthouse? From my light reading, i understand that the yellow eyed penguins come ashore at dusk but based on the comments from past visitors, it seems like the penguins can also be spotted at noon. i'd like to know at which time will give me a better chance to see the penguins so that i can plan my road trip accordingly. Thanks all!

It is best to go from about an hour before sunset until anytime until darkness. Some are there for most of the day (guarding chicks etc) It's basically 'luck' on being in the right place at the right time. You are about 90% certain to see at least a couple, but it's a great place to visit even if the Penguins weren't there

It is not wheelchair friendly unfortunately. You wouldn't get very far down the gravel path (about 40 metres) before coming to a narrow gateway, impassable for a wheelchair. Even if it were possible to get through that gate, the path then turns into a grass track which is bumpy and rutted with rabbit burrows for the rest of the distance to where the wildlife are found.

Yes we did see some last time we were there. Oamaru which is not far away also has Yellow Eyed Penguins which you can see for free and also little Blue Penguins but you have to pay to see the little Blue penguins. sunset is the best time to see the Yellow Eyed and Little Blue penguins at Oamaru as well
