These types of scams are becoming more common, with reports of 30 victims and over $100,000 dollars scammed just in Sarasota.
WCSO warns residents of missed jury duty scam
The scam consists of calls coming from a “Sergeant Anderson,” who is seeking payment for a warrant for having missed jury duty, the agency said on Facebook. The scammers try to utilize names of WCSO actual employees, and sometimes even the sheriff’s office’s phone number to appear more legitimate, the post said.
Two indicted in Sarasota jury duty fine scam
Sanders and Andrews face one count of conspiracy to commit wire fraud. If convicted, they each face a maximum penalty of 20 years in federal prison. Federal prosecutors also say the pair should forfeit $12,825, the alleged proceeds from the scam.
