The Sensex closed 109 points, or 0.14 per cent, down at 78,139.01, while the Nifty 50 settled at 23,644.80, down 0.10 per cent.

The Nifty 50 closed near flat on the final trading session of the year on Tuesday, as markets seeing a modest recovery after earlier losses led by information technology (IT) stocks, but thin volumes kept the market's movements subdued.

The year 2024 was a mixed bag for the markets. The Sensex recorded a gain of 8.12 per cent year-to-date, while the Nifty 50 appreciated by 8.75 per cent. Both indices touched their all-time highs in September 2024, with the Sensex reaching 85,978.35 points and the Nifty hitting 26,277.35.

The trends on Gift Nifty also indicate a gap-down start for the Indian benchmark index. The Gift Nifty was trading around 23,655 level, a discount of nearly 160 points from the Nifty futures’ previous close.

The BSE ​​Sensex slipped 109 points while Nifty50 ended flat on the last trading day of the year 2024 amid persistent foreign fund outflows as selling in heavyweight IT stocks weighed on the benchmarks.

The Indian benchmark equity indices, BSE Sensex and NSE Nifty 50, witnessed a recovery from intra-day lows but ended the last trading session of 2024, near flatline on Tuesday.

The S P BSE Sensex lost 392.61 points to 77,855.52, while the NSE Nifty50 was down by 107.80 points to 23,537.10 as of 9:28 AM.
