AMD today announced the launch of the Athlon 64 FX-62 and Athlon 64 X2 5000+ CPUs, which are compatible with the new socket AM2 platform. With AM2, AMD is finally supporting DDR2 memory.
Interestingly though, AMD is apparently planning to allow end users to not only drop in an AM2+ processor into their AM2 motherboard, but also future 45nm socket AM3 processors too.
The compatibility, however, only goes one way; Socket AM2/AM2+ CPUs are not compatible with Socket AM3 motherboards. As for the relationship between AM3 and DDR3, that's a tad less clear.
With the brand new specification of AMD Socket AM2, the overall performance of A33G motherboard will be extremely enhanced by supporting for advanced dual-channel DDR2 memory.
A PhenomII X4 955 BE worked like a champ in my AM2 (not AM2+) board, a Gigabyte GA-MA69G-S3H with AMD 690G chipset. Course I had an AM3 board waiting for it, but I was just curious.
