Originally assigned in 1947, 305 was Florida’s original statewide area code. Now it’s one of 22 area codes around the state. South Florida’s second area code, 786, was added in 1998.
This was the reason the 786 area code, or “overlay” in telecommunications parlance, was added to join 305 in July 1998 in Miami-Dade. The 305 area code existed alone since its creation in 1947.
That’s why our 305 and 786 area codes just got a new sibling. Meet 645, the new area code that will soon be used in Miami-Dade County and the Florida Keys. Don’t panic.
