Astonishing ‘Megaflash’ Sets World Record for Longest Lightning Strike
A lightning flash tore across the sky above the Great Plains, stretching across a staggering 515 miles (829 kilometers) from eastern Texas to Kansas City. That “megaflash” shattered the previous record for longest lightning flash of 477 miles (768 kilometers), set in 2023.
A report was issued from the National Weather Service on Saturday at 1:50 p.m. EDT for strong thunderstorms until 2:30 p.m.
In 2022, 19 died and 53 were injured. People have died from lightning strikes in New Jersey before, according to CDC data. A 59-year-old Manchester man was killed in Seaside Park in June 2024.
