The talks around drugs including Novo Nordisk's Wegovy, GSK's Trelegy Ellipta, and Pfizer's Xtandi will set Medicare prices that go into effect in 2027.

The Biden administration on Friday released the next round of prescription drugs selected for Medicare price negotiations, including Ozempic — the blockbuster diabetes drug that’s also used for weight loss. The drug has faced public backlash over its high price, fueling demand for cheaper alternatives.

The two blockbusters Novo Nordisk medicines are among 15 additional drugs whose prices Medicare will be allowed to negotiate with drugmakers.

Medicare announced Friday that it has selected 15 drugs, including the hugely popular medications Ozempic and Wegovy, used for diabetes and weight loss, as well as some blockbuster cancer medications and other drugs, for its second round of price talks.

Federal officials are targeting the blockbuster drugs as part of their ongoing initiative to lower drug costs.

Novo Nordisk's diabetes medication, Ozempic, is one of 15 drugs set to enter Medicare price negotiations for the year 2027, as announced by the U.S. government. This move is part of a broader effort to reduce prescription drug costs for Medicare beneficiaries.

The White House announced the first batch of negotiated Medicare drug prices in August after negotiating for reduced prices for months. The 10 new lower prices — which ranged from a price cut of 79% for Type 2 diabetes drug Januvia to a 38% cut for cancer drug Imbruvica — will go into effect in January 2026.

Announcement of the 15 medicines chosen for the second round of negotiations is one of the Biden administration’s final health policy acts.
