BOSTON — The Massachusetts Department of Public Health (DPH) announced Tuesday that West Nile virus (WNV) has been detected in mosquitoes in Massachusetts for the first time this year.
There were 69 confirmed human cases of West Nile virus in 2024, including 13 deaths, according to the IDPH. This was the highest number since 2018, when 17 virus-related human deaths were recorded.
The worst West Nile outbreak in the U.S. to date came in 2002. That year in Illinois alone, there were 884 cases across the state, and 67 deaths, with 42 of them in Cook County.
West Nile virus has been found in samples taken several times in recent years, and two deaths in Louisiana were attributed to the virus in 2018.
