Border Patrol and Rio Grande Valley residents respond to policy changes under the Trump administration amid ongoing challenges at the southern border.

While the number could increase to 10,000, the Trump administration has deployed 1,000 Army soldiers and 500 Marines to Texas and California to patrol the southern border, making good on the president's promise to ramp up deportations.

Governor Phil Scott identified David Maland as the fallen officer, extending his “heartfelt condolences to Agent Maland’s family, friends, and colleagues."

David Maland, 44, was a military veteran who worked security duty at the Pentagon during the Sept. 11 attacks, his family said.

Maland was the first Border Patrol agent to be killed in the line of duty since Javier Vega Jr. was shot and killed near Santa Monica, Texas, in 2014, according to records provide
