Blades Brown — truly one of the greatest golf names of all time, by the way — is making his professional debut at this week's American Express at PGA West. Brown played La Quinta Country Club on Thursday — the AmEx uses three courses for the first three rounds before the 54-hole cut is made Saturday night and the final round is played at PGA West's Pete Dye Stadium Course (the other being the Nicklaus Tournament Course) — and posted an even-par 72.

Brown made six birdies in a row on his front nine and had eight birdies in nine holes at one point. Brown shot an 8-under 64, rising to a tie for 41st. He began the day in 117th place after shooting an even-par 72 in his first round as a pro.

The PGA Tour’s west coast swing began this week as La Quinta, California played host to The American Express. Unfortunately, the world’s best player, Scottie Scheffler, was forced to withdraw following hand surgery.
