A new poll shows Texans want to ban THC but are in favor of legalizing the use of recreational marijuana. THC or tetrahydrocannabinol is the main psychoactive chemical component found in cannabis and is what causes the sensation of feeling high.

A new poll of voters shows that most Texans are ready for significant changes to the state's marijuana laws, including decriminalization and legalizing recreational use. The survey showed that only 22% of Texans want current marijuana laws to remain in place.

But most Texans think it’s time for a change. A survey released today by the Hobby School of Public Affairs at the University of Houston found that 62% of surveyed Texans want to legalize recreational marijuana use, and almost three quarters said the same about gambling.
Texas Under Pressure to Legalize Marijuana
According to current Texas law possession of two ounces or less of marijuana is a misdemeanor punishable by up to 180 days in prison and a $2,000 fine. For two to four ounces the maximum penalty is one year of incarceration or a $4,000 fine. Possession of larger quantities is a felony and attracts significantly higher penalties.
