Five people in Germany died from fireworks accidents last night as the country ushered in the new year with its traditional pyrotechnic celebrations.

Five people died across Germany and a police officer was seriously injured from accidents linked to powerful fireworks that Germans traditionally set off to celebrate the new year, police said.
