White Pine Framing Lumber - The Forestry Forum
Jul 19, 2023 · In his experience, he said, "White pine doesn't hold nails well, it tends to pop nails as it dries, and it makes a junky frame." I would presume that popping nails is an issue regardless of species, but I am concerned about strength and quality. Can anyone speak to using white pine as a framing lumber for a stick-built house?

Nov 15, 2016 · Multiply half the porch depth by the beam span to get the area. Multiply that by the design load, which is the sum of the dead load and live or snow load. Assuming 10 psf and 20 psf respectively, that is 30 lbs per square foot. For a porch 8' deep and a beam span of 16', that equates to a design load for the beam of 1920 lbs.

I just bought a new portable mill and I have a property with some 24" wide Eastern White Pine that I am having cut down and will be working with 21' long (for 2 x 10) and I am thinking 12' or 16' lengths for 1x8 & 2x6. What length is recommended for lengths of the 1x8 & 2x6 boards 12 ' or 16' ?

May 18, 2004 · In my opinion, its a matter of opinion.I'm currently using hemlock because it's stronger, I prefer the appearance, and there is no messy pitch. However, all of my t&g will be white pine. The pine helps to brighten a room and its easier to set the pitch in 8/4 than 8X12. Also the hemlocks on my property are on average larger than my pines.

White pine is a good choice, I have built a few frames out of it, but you need to size/grade your timbers to the load/span and as already been mentioned, it is not as strong as some other choices. When in doubt, build it stout, if your gunna build it, overbuild it.

Aug 17, 2012 · Hi Pete, It is most likely the White Pine Sawyer Beetle. They can be present in the log within a few weeks. You can actually hear them chewing away in the wood. You will be okay once you mill the logs. The big mills use water from ponds on continuous sprinklers to keep them away. They can also give a nasty bite.
